Yes, Rob's source ought to be patches off of HEAD (or even better, off of a 
stable release), not patches off of a snapshot of the unstable development 
version from a certain moment in the past.

The first thing I'm going to do when I return to Mnet hacking is start 
maintaining HEAD as an always-working, always-semi-stable, monotonically-
improving version, with disruptive development done on branches and merged to 
HEAD only when doing so maintains these three qualities of HEAD.

I'm also investigating using a different version control system that would 
make branching and merging easier.  Here are my notes so far:
